Leica Optics – 100 Years On

Leica Precision Optics Binoculars

Ur-Leica 35mm camera., 1913In 1849 Carl Kellner founded an Optics Institute in Wetzlar, Germany. In 1869 Ernst Leitz became managing director. He created the name we know now, using the first three letters of his surname and the first two letters of his passion; cameras, Lei-ca.

The First Advert for Leica Prism Binoculars Printed in 1910Ernst worked with a gentleman called Oskar Barnack who built the first 35mm camera, the Ur-Leica in 1913. At this time cameras were slow to use and awkward.  The new Leica was a breakthrough, portable and ready to use at any time. There was no longer the need to change film plates after each shot or have people posing for excessive amount of times.

Oskar Barnack changed the photography world forever.

In May 1907 Leica released their first 6 x 18 Prism Binoculars. Until the Second World War, binoculars were mainly used in the military but soon became popular with theatre goers and travellers. At this point they were not up to standard for nature watching or hunting, Leica soon changed that by creating special binoculars suited for country sports. This was all thanks to Ernst Leitz’s interest in hunting and the outdoors.
