The Sporting Lodge – from India to the English Lake District
The Sporting Lodge nestles in the English Lake District, where the MacFarlaine family have served their customers worldwide for 50 years.
George MacFarlaine, an English gun maker and keen shot, scored some shooting firsts when he perfected the triple barrel single trigger shotgun and made some of the finest shotguns for his customers.
Sadly, George died in 2000 but the family traditions have continued.
His daughter, Lindsay MacFarlaine, and husband John, have taken the gun making workshop into the 21st century and are now supplying customers with the finest shooting, hunting and country clothing and accessories.
“The Internet has introduced us to shooters worldwide from Alaska to Argentina, from the Russian Federation to New Zealand. We have had many UK and European customers."
Our ‘holidays’ to Austria, Italy and Germany were always to go and meet gun makers and shooting customers - but the website has taken the company to a new level,” says Lindsay, who is now a director of the company, having worked in marketing and communications for 25 years.
The family tradition of gun making, shooting and hunting began in the 1930s in the jungles of India, when Samuel MacFarlaine would go with his son George and wife Ena, for overnight forays.
George was in his element, hunting all types of wildfowl and game, sleeping under the stars and feasting on the day’s bag.
Settling in England George used his engineering skills and love of hunting to start a new business.
Starting small, George used his knowledge and contacts throughout the world to source well-known guns for his customers.
His passion however, was in the mechanics of shotguns and he spent many an hour stripping and rebuilding the likes of Purdey and Holland and Holland.
As a collector of multi-barrel shotguns, George was fascinated and began manufacturing a limited number of his three barrelled shotguns.
Now run by George’s daughter Lindsay, the company continues to serve its customers with old-fashioned personal customer service despite using the technology of today.
